DENVER - A 53-year-old man was killed and two people were missing in Colorado after floodwaters and a mudslide triggered by torrential rains roared down mountainsides stripped of vegetation by a wildfire, authorities said on Saturday.

PHOENIX -- A northern Arizona family that was lost at sea for weeks in an ill-fated attempt to leave the U.S. over what they consider government interference in religion will fly back home Sunday.

In the early hours of Aug. 3, the AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council organized a group of national union leaders and activists to participate in the washing of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. As the sun rose over the Three Service Members Statue, volunteers received a welcome from the Vietnam Veterans of America, saluted the memorial and observed a moment of silence.

Bayard Rustin, one of the most prominent activists in the civil rights movement and co-founder of the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI), will be posthumously honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the White House announced Thursday. Rustin, who worked closely with Randolph, was a major figure in organizing the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. A week of actions and celebrations is planned later this month to mark the 50th anniversary of the march. Read more here.

The logic behind Walmart's low wages--the average front-line employee makes about $8 an hour--is that the company can't afford to pay its workers higher wages and keep its prices low.  This is also the argument behind why Walmart offers little in the way of benefits, particularly to its part-time workers, who aren't offered health insurance.  Even many of the company's full-time workers don't get health care because they can't afford it.  Walmart employees rely upon as much as $1 million worth of public benefits per store in order for employees to survive on the company's low wages.

The U.S. Postal Service just released a series of “Made in America: Building a Nation” first-class Forever stamps. The 12-stamp series features images of industrial workers from the early 20th century, and 11 were taken by famed photographer Lewis Hine.   While no one can argue with USPS’s decision to honor the coal miners, construction workers, textile workers and others who helped build the nation (and continue to do so), the gesture would mean a lot more if the USPS treated its current workers with the same respect.

On Aug. 14, hundreds of cars from more than 30 California cities will join in a caravan to Bakersfield to visit Congressman Kevin McCarthy's (R-Calif.) office to tell him to support an immigration policy with a road map to citizenship.
