Bene't Holmes is a 25-year-old single mother who works at Walmart in Chicago and struggles to survive on low wages. In February, she suffered a miscarriage while at work, after a manager denied her request for job duties that were less physically demanding. She asked for a leave of absence after the miscarriage to recover and was denied that request as well and was subsequently discipined for time she took off. On Saturday, June 21, union members, along with their local AFL-CIO/United Way Community Services liaisons, will be volunteering alongside hundreds of thousands of people around the world who will be participating in the seventh annual United Way Day of Action. Many national and local unions have partnerships with United Way, and the organization's signature volunteer event will consist of hundreds of action events in countries across the globe. The events will help expand the impact of United Way's work and strengthen existing relationships with unions and community volunteers and activists.
