A ferocious ice storm was wreaking havoc Wednesday across the Southeast, cutting power for more than 350,000 customers and caking streets in ice and snow.Georgia — not accustomed to dealing with such wintry chaos — was the bull's eye for the storm, with wide swaths of the state in the dark.

What's a Republican-controlled committee supposed to do if they are trying to ram through extreme legislation and don't want to hear from those affected by the law? Don't tell anybody about a "public" hearing until the last minute and refuse to let the public testify in the hearing. Sounds far-fetched in a democratic society, right? It isn't. It just happened in Georgia.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo's (D) Port Authority Executive Director Patrick Foye sent a letter to the heads of American, JetBlue, and United airlines, warning them that they could lose their slots in the new central terminal at LaGuardia airport if they don't improve pay and benefits to workers at LaGuardia and JFK airports.  Nearly 6,000 contract workers for the three airlines are paid at near-minimum wage levels with no benefits.  Meanwhile, Cuomo said that he wants to improve the airports to world-class status.

The GOP is all about freedom—for corporations, that is. Republicans believe, for example, that business should be free from the kind of government regulation that would prevent chemical companies from spewing poison into West Virginia drinking water.
