New Jersey lawmakers said Monday they will form a special investigative committee, with the power to order testimony from witnesses, to probe the George Washington Bridge lane closures that have exploded into a scandal for Gov. Chris Christie.

During the holiday season last month, emergency unemployment insurance payments for 1.3 million workers who have been out of work for six months or longer lapsed, leaving these families without a necessary lifeline. This shocking and heartless Republican move ignores that the jobs just don't exist for this many workers and, without these payments, many families don't have the money to pay rent or buy food. And if things continue, without Congress fixing the problem, the numbers of people without an income will grow by more than 3 million more by the end of June.Take action now and sign the petition telling Congress to bring the extension to a vote now and do the right thing in making sure that millions don't suffer any further.

Deadly violence against striking garment workers has set off a global response by unions and allies around the world. Over the past several days, unions, labor rights activists and student groups protested at Cambodian embassies and consulates first in Seoul, Berlin and Jakarta and since then in Washington, D.C., London and Hong Kong. WASHINGTON — An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 struck north of Puerto Rico on Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.It said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.4, was very shallow, at a depth of 17.7 miles below the seabed. It struck at 12:01 a.m.
